Hate Dentists Blog Finds a Home

by Dr. Joe :) · 122 comments

You never know where blogging takes you.  I recently switched this blog’s URL over to www.HateDentists.com

hate dentists baby

Hate Dentists Blog gets new home.

So why call it Hate Dentists Blog?

I needed a name that related to Dental Psychology. Something that spoke to the extreme drama some people experience when sitting in a dental chair.

“Hate Dentists” captures all that drama in 2 simple words.

My only reservation is that the name might attract only the ranters. Some people just want to vent their fury towards the dental profession.

When I started the blog I had no idea what direction it would go in and it soon outgrew my local-based name of Toronto Dentist Smile Blog. I’ll keep that one going as a team-based blog.

Once you’re ready to move past the hate and you want to know more about your dental options, visit my Dental Consumer’s Blog called Dental Secrets & Tips Guide.

New Hate Dentists Video

Good news… We recently created a video related to the Reasons People Hate Dentists. We all had a good time, and from my acting skills it was clear I should stick to dentistry.

Not sure if it’s going to play out as a horror, a comedy, or a little of both.

We’ll see.

Dr. Joe 🙂

As it so happens Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry clinic sure helped me hate dental tourism. Received one of those smile make overs they offer but it turned into a smile rakeover. My dental work is being redone in Alberta Canada and i love my Canadian dentists who are taking on that task. Great site and funny video. Thanks doc! I sure love the dentists I have now!

Joe,

First, I think that your title was a fine choice. I don’t think it is too extreme. I also found the video a nice visual element that supplements your top 10 list.

Finally, I couldn’t resist sharing my dental story as you prompt in your sidebar (it’s not necessarily total truth, but, being a humor blog, it is funny). This was inspired by a visit to the dentist, and, being a good-humored (as I can see from your blog) dentist yourself, I think you may enjoy reading it: titled “The Torturous Dental Examination,” you can find it at http://www.highschoolhumorblog.com/the-torturous-dental-examination.html .

No one should ever be afraid of dentists, the best thing to do if you have fear of sitting on a dental chair is to ask your dentists what your options are like “dental sedation” this should take away the anxiety you feel and make your dental procedure a good experience.

When you think of root canal, you think dentist, drilling and pain, but that is not all there is to know. A root canal is actually the part of your tooth that has the nerve endings and pulp. The pulp is what holds all the nerve endings and blood vessels in your tooth so that you can feel the heat and coldness on your tooth. It also helps provide vitamins and minerals to your teeth to help make them stronger.

You really have a great blog. I have been keeping up with it for a while. I think that the more people educate themselves about seeing the dentist, they will be less scared to go. It’s just a bad move to avoid caring for your teeth because of a bit of fear. My wife was very nervous and I will have her read some articles to help her relax. I am still somewhat amazed that fear of the dentist is such a huge issue. It’s amazing that people can skydive and do all these crazy things but they are afraid of the dentist. I am 31 and have had all kinds of procedures done and have never had any pain. Not sure what all the fuss is over.

I think people can be scared of the dentist because they feel like they can not communicate. When your mouth is open with gadgets inside, it is difficult to talk. We always suggest coming up with a hand signal with your doctor before you begin your treatment. That way if you begin to feel nervous, painful, etc.. you can make your signal and the doctor can stop whatever he is doing. Better communication does a lot of good!

I don’t trust dentists. I had problems with one of my teeth a few years ago and had to have a root canal done. Last month, I found out that the crown had come off loose and the posts came loose from the tooth. Seems that the remaining part of my tooth had been cracked.

I can’t help wonder if the original dentist who did the root canal didn’t botch up the procedure. When a dentist makes a mistake, I wonder…do they ever admit it? Or, do they just cover it up with a band-aid treatment. I now had to have this tooth extracted and waiting until I have enough money to have a dental implant.

I had two horrible experiences with two different dentists that made me neglect my teeth for many years. Pain finally brought me around. I LOVE my new dentist. He has helped me overcome my fears and has made my mouth healthy and pain free again (albeit with fewer teeth.) Now my main problem is the invasive nature of dentistry. I am not a touchy feely person, and don’t like people in my personal space. That includes inside my mouth. I of course suck it up and after 20 or 30 minutes it takes all my discipline not to squirm out of the chair. And I am very comfortable with my dentist, we get along great. I guess going to the dentist will never be anxiety free for me.

Its interesting to hear patients often say “I hate the Dentist.” I don’t think we, as dentists, do anything to harm them, but instead patients are reacting to the fear of pain being created. If anything, when someone comes to the dental office, we are trying cure that pain or prevent it from happening. If anything, we’re your friend.

Dentists should have a nice and soft attitude towards the patient especially considering that most of them are anxious. Patients should be comforted and informed in detail regarding the procedure that is being done.Dentist’s tend to do this because some of them get irritated by some stubborn patients while some don’t see the reason to be afraid and get irritated when patients do not co-operate. These are no excuses though for the dentist to have a haughty attitude towards the patient.

I personally hate the dentist because of my high anxiety. I have gone to a few dentists and they say “oh we’ll take care of you, don’t worry” yeah right. Every time I come out of an office, I never want to set foot in a dentists office ever again. Is it so hard for people to even cater a little bit to being nice? People tend to freak out especially if they haven’t had work done in a long time. I’m just tired of dentists thinking that they can just make you fork over money because they fixed your teeth and were jerks about it.

It’s crazy that there is a blog created specifically for dental fear. I can totally relate to this! Sometimes you just hate dentists so much that you wish you had perfect teeth. But so far my best bet when it comes to overcoming my dental fear is to just undergo sedation treatment at a dental surgery clinic in Sydney (where I live). Sedation allows you to sleep while the doctor drills your teeth so you won’t feel anything at all. Great blog, though!

In todays world people have good reason to hate the dentist.Just look at the news. Always seems to be a dentist who hurt or killed someone throw medical waste in the water, rape or violate someone under sedation cover up there and others mistakes and the list is endless Dentist seem to think there above the law and better then the common person.
In NY and PA dental lawsuit have increased 5 fold in the last few yrs with record settlements in the millions. Just a few yrs ago it was hard to find a lawyer to take a dental case. Now there are lawyers who just do dental malpractice case and there come out of the wood work looking to cash in on poor dental work and the lack of care by dentist to clean up there profession, weed out the bad eggs. The funny part is dentist do not understand or refuse to understand what they are doing to hurt the dental profession.Sadly it will take millions of paid out settelments for them to understand.
The bottom line is dentist have a LONG track record sub std care and have made the pubic fear them One bad egg takes you all down
ITS TIME TO CLEAN IT UP .If you dont, the lawyers will.
Until then people have a dam good reason the fear and not trust the dentist or O/S

Your perspective is unusual – suggesting that “noble” litigation lawyers will help clean up the dental profession.

Is the recent escalation of claims against dentists indicative of an increase in problems? Probably not. Dentists are now seen as easy and lucrative targets for legal attack.

Will legal attacks help clean up the dental profession from “bad eggs?” That’s doubtful. The litigation lawyers prey on the vulnerable, not on the devious.

The majority of people hate dentists, but people always make it seem like this ‘hate’ stems from fear or that dental unpleasantness is just inevitable.

I don’t agree with you totally. My kids best friend was my local dentist at Stephen J. Pyle, DDS until last year, when we moved to central Florida. Kids and dentist always have this awesome bonding. The only instruction I give to my kids is to brush before they go to sleep also we regularly visit a dentist ensuring them a healthy dental life. I proud to say they have a healthy teeth, no matter how much they have candies and sugar.

Children have fear of getting dental clinic. Now a days Dentists take many steps to make it seem far less so, including Pain Management and Dental Sedation. Going to the dentist represents the sum of all fears for some people. Even their are some bad memories stop us to visit dentist.

Children are normally phobic to dental treatment even so there are many Pain Management and Dental Sedation available. This is more kind of psychological fear then physical that causes this.

Part of being a more successful dentist is about learning about WHY people hate going to the dentist and disarming those problems.

For example – if a patient comes in and hasn’t been flossing do you talk to them like a teenager who just got caught coming in past curfew? People don’t like being embarrassed.

I don’t hate the dentist, I just don’t like the thought of someone judging my teeth and having their hands in my mouth and worrying that I might have to undergo some painful treatment! Nothing against the dentist themselves! I think the new name gives quite an impact and it definitely made me curious enough to check out your blog – it’s great, thank you!
